About the modern physic garden kitcheN
The Modern Physic Garden Kitchen is a compendium of wholefood recipes and therapeutic remedies designed to complement health and natural healing. In a traditional physic garden, plants are arranged according to condition. So, here, recipes, tips and remedies are organised according to the ailment or bodily system you want to treat. You can search the site by using the medicinal terms in the category links on the left. The Modern Physic Garden isn't somewhere you visit: it's a global medicine cabinet and daily practice that you'll find in your supermarket, farmers market, kitchen garden or window box.

I grew up in England in the 80s, when 'health food' was a pasta salad and a special occasion meant coronation chicken. One of my grandmothers served up fish mousse and pineapple rings with cottage cheese, the other fed me on all-you-can-eat white doorstep sandwiches before her (incredible) macaroni cheese. As much as I liked the white foods, they didn't like me, and as a teenager I ended up with bad skin, a bloated body, endless colds and infections, headaches and exhaustion. After much trial and error, and a lot of elimination diets, I learnt these things were best treated naturally. Since then I've fostered an interest in the connection between food and health, and I now closely guard my clear head, strong health and high energy levels. I've run the gamut of diets and nutritional theories, from macrobiotic to raw, fasting to alkaline. Somewhere along that road, in cooking for myself and for friends, I figured out how to cook.
My work as a photographer has taken me all over the world, and in my travels I've collected a wealth of ancient and modern natural health tips from living in China, Japan, Indonesia, North America and Europe. You'll see some of those experiences and ingredients crop up in these recipes.
After a decade of long haul travel and a 24/7 schedule, I was running on empty. I was suffering insomnia, anxiety, exhaustion and allergic reactions. When I hit breaking point, I realised I had plenty of natural tools at hand to fix myself, and as I went through the process of natural R&R I decided to write down some of what I've discovered in the hopes that it might help others.
All the pictures on this site are taken by me. Currently I live in Lisbon, Portugal, with T.P. (whose drawings you'll see throughout the site) and the Little Black Cat.
NB: I have no medical training nor nutritional training, I've just read a lot of material on alternative health and wholefoods. I cannot advise on your specific health concerns. This is a site sharing personal explorations into food as medicine. Always seek professional advice for any health issues.
